Towards Digitalization and Sustainability – Research Stay of Prof. Frazzon at BIBA

From November 2022 to February 2023, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Enzo Morosini Frazzon from the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) in Brazil is conducting research at BIBA. We are glad to welcoming Prof. Frazzon back to BIBA as a long-standing cooperation partner and looking forward to continuing our successful collaboration.

The scientific stay is taking place within the project "EngMind - Supporting the emergence of a new engineering mindset for the Brazilian digital transformation" funded by the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Foundation as a Georg-Forster-Research-Fellowship.

The project aims to support the emergence of a new way of thinking of engineers – sustainable, global and science-oriented. This should contribute to the transformation of civil society, the economy and Brazilian industry. The sustainable performance (economic, environmental and social) of digitally transformed industries depends on knowledge-intensive technologies, components and systems, as well as on the appropriate mindset and skills of decision-makers in socio-cyber-physical systems. Critical and complex manufacturing decisions with long-term impacts on resilience and sustainability depend on actors who are able to deal with a new, digital reality.

In this context, the training of a new generation of production engineers aims at contributing to the competitiveness of Brazilian industry. Their training includes research-based learning practices driven by the collaboration of industry and academia.

The Alexander-von-Humboldt-Foundation foster academic cooperation between outstanding scientists from abroad and Germany. The network comprises more than 31,000 Humboldtians in over 140 countries, including 57 Nobel laureates. The Foundation awards Georg-Forster-Fellowships for research that promotes the transfer of knowledge and methods and contributes to the development of the scientists' countries of origin.
